BJP-TMC face-off in Tripura

NEW DELHI: The BJP and the Trinamool Congress which fought the recent elections in West Bengal bitterly are now caught in a face-off in Tripura where the Mamata Banerjee-led party has accused ruling party workers of violence.
Meanwhile, the state police questioned a Trinamool Congress (TMC) worker after detaining her allegedly for disturbing a ruling party event.
The TMC on Sunday claimed that Gujarat model was at work in Agartala, capital of Tripura and said its MPs would reach Delhi to raise the issue.
The police in Tripura had on Sunday detained West Bengal Trinamool Congress leader Sayani Ghosh for questioning following a complaint by a BJP worker that she had disturbed a street corner meeting of Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb on Saturday night, according to newsagency PTI.
She was detained 24 hours before a planned visit by TMC’s national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee after being called in for questioning in a police station, the newsagency added.
TMC leaders, meanwhile, alleged that their workers were also roughed up by BJP supporters outside the East Agartala Women’s police station.

In the backdrop, TMC leader Derek O’Brien claimed that the Gujarat model was at work in Tripura and said his party’s MPs were now headed to Delhi to protest the developments.

The TMC and the BJP have been bitter political rivals. BJP has also often accused the TMC of resorting to violence against its cadre especially in West Bengal where Mamata Banerjee is the chief minister.
Coming down heavily on Trinamool Congress, Tripura chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb on Saturday accused TMC of fanning communal hatred and importing violent politics of West Bengal into the state.
Deb was addressing a civic poll rally in his constituency at Banamalipur in Agartala. The CM alleged that from Day One, TMC has been targeting the state’s goodwill and heritage.
