MUMBAI: CBI conducting searches at premises of former state home minister Anil Deshmukh in a case connected with a leak of purported CBI preliminary enquiry (PE) report giving Deshmukh a clean chit during initial stage. Earlier CBI had arrested Deshmukh’s lawyer Anand Daga and CBI sub-inspector Abhishek Tiwari in the case.
Tiwari was part of the CBI team that was investigating a corruption case against Deshmukh. Tiwari had passed the PE related documents and information to Daga for bribe.
Recently, a purported CBI report giving Deshmukh a clean chit during initial stage of preliminary enquiry (PE) where Deshmukh alleged for corruption, was circulated in the media. The CBI registered a separate case related with the leakage of the report against its officials and Daga, for attempting to subvert the ongoing investigation against Deshmukh.
The CBI found that Daga bribed Tiwari “disclosing sensitive and confidential documents.”
On August 28, a message along with a preliminary enquiry report which had apparently concluded that a case has not been made out against Deshmukh based on available evidence was circulated among media organizations. The CBI officials had then told TOI that the FIR registered against Deshmukh was based on the final findings of preliminary enquiry report, which mentioned that a cognizable case has been made out.
The CBI is investigating a corruption case against Deshmukh where former Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh has alleged that Deshmukh, as home minister, had asked now-dismissed police officer Sachin Waze to illegally collect Rs 100 crore from bar owners in the city every month for him. The CBI is also investigating if Deshmukh had played a role in the transfers and postings of police officers. After recently development, the CBI registered a separate case Daga, Tiwari and will investigate Deshmukh’s role in it.
