NEW DELHI: The Defence Acquisitions Council on Tuesday cleared procurements worth over Rs 14,000 for the country’s military, including that of 118 indigenous Arjun Mark-1A tanks.
The defence ministry had recently cleared the induction of these tanks into the Indian Army.
Today’s meeting of the council was chaired by defence minister Rajnath Singh.
The 118 Arjun Mark-1A will be procured at a cost of more than Rs 6,000 crore.
The tank has been fully designed and developed by the DRDO in close coordination with the Indian Army. 118 tanks would be joining the fleet of the first batch of 124 Arjun tanks which have already been inducted into the Army and are deployed in the western desert along the Pakistan front.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi Prime handed over to the Army the home-made tank at a function in Chennai on February 14.
According to reports, the Heavy Vehicles Factory in Tamil Nadu has been placed with a Rs 8,500 crore order for manufacturing of the 118 tanks.
PM Modi has often spoken of self-reliance in defence production as a major part of realising the dream of an ‘aatmanirbhar Bharat.’
