A proposal was indeed made at the Cabinet meeting to extend the probationary period of 60,000 graduates in public service, by a period of six months, minister of Mass Media – Dulles Alahapperuma says.

He was speaking thus at the Cabinet briefing held earlier today (14).

However, he noted that this extension was sought only because the placement process with regard to these graduates’ appointments, were not finalised yet.

He pointed out that nearly 18,000 of this number were to be appointed as teachers.

However, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa had pointed out that such a lengthy extension was not fair and urged the relevant ministers to finalise this matter within 2-3 months.

Responding to queries that certain such graduates have reportedly not received their 20,000-rupee allowance properly, the minister said that they have not received any complaint as such. However, if such an instance exists, they can provide the details to the ministry of State Administration.
