India records biggest single-day rise of Omicron cases, spreads in big cities : Top developments

NEW DELHI: The megacities Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata are experiencing a surge in Covid-19 cases, although without a corresponding rise in hospitalisations, but fears are growing about a spread to rural areas in coming days.
India on Thursday saw the biggest single-day jump of 495 Omicron cases, taking the total number of infections of the new variant of coronavirus to 2,630, according to Union health ministry data.
Meanwhile, 90,928 new coronavirus infections were reported, the highest in over 200 days, taking India’s caseload to 3,51,09,286, the data stated.
Here are the top developments of the day-
India sees massive spike in Covid case
India registered a single-day rise of 90,928 cases, a significant rise from the previous day’s 58,097 Covid cases in a span of 24 hours. A total of 325 deaths have also been reported in the same time, said the Union ministry of health and family welfare.
With the addition of new deaths, the death toll has reached 4,82,876. Meanwhile, the active caseload has jumped to 2,85,401 which constitutes 0.81 per cent of the country’s total positive cases.
Omicron spreads in big cities but hospitalisations still low
The wail of ambulance sirens is getting a little frequent. Hospital emergency rooms are getting busier, and buzzier. The rush is almost inevitable as cities like Chennai, Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Kolkata and Delhi are registering a rapid rise in coronavirus infections and a spike in hospital admissions lately. But most cases are mild and only a few needed ventilator or oxygen support.
Many cities have already imposed night curfews and weekend lockdowns, as well as closed schools. Political rallies, however, have continued in several states where elections are due in the next few weeks and months.
