NEW DELHI: Amidst the continuing 20-month long military confrontation with China in eastern Ladakh, Lt-General Anindya Sengupta has taken over as the new commander of the crucial Leh-based 14 Corps. Lt-Gen Sengupta succeeded Lt-Gen P G K Menon, who was leading the Indian delegation during military talks with China till now, as the general officer commanding of the 14 Corps on Wednesday.
Commissioned into the Punjab Regiment in June 1987, Lt-Gen Sengupta was posted as the director general (strategic planning) in the Army headquarters before taking over the reins of the 14 Corps, which is tasked with handling eastern Ladakh with China as well as the Kargil and Siachen sectors with Pakistan. Lt-Gen Menon has completed his tenure of over a year at the helm of the 14 Corps. The change of guard comes at a time when India and China are yet to finalise the date for the 14th round of corps commander-level talks. In the last round on October 10, China had refused to complete the troop disengagement at Patrolling Point-15 in the Hot Springs-Gogra-Kongka La area. tnn
