Malavika Mohanan has turned muse for popular Bollywood designer Shehla Khan and embraced her latest collection-‘Twilight Symphony: A Wedding Affair’, which draws inspiration from mesmerizing sunsets and skylines. In an exclusive interaction with ETimes, Malvika opened up about the bespoke collection and her personal style Excerpts:
What made you say yes to Shehla Khan?
I am a fan of fashion, handloom and textiles grab my attention. I feel in India, Shehla is one of those very few people who do such interesting work with laces. I love her dresses, it’s so feminine, completely up my alley. I am very happy to be a part of her work.
Describe your experience of collaborating with Shehla…
I have only spent a few hours with her while shooting for the collection. Unfortunately, it was a really hectic day for me, so I had to rush but she was super sweet. She is very specific when it comes to her garments and what she wants to portray. She is just very nice to work with. It’s important.
What did you like most about the collection?
When we see Indian clothes like lehengas, we are used to seeing them in bright colours, it’s either in some shade of red or maroon or blue, yellow. But Shehla’s designs are in soft pastel colours. This combined with laces gives the collection a dreamy, wispy vibes.
Throw some light on your upcoming Bollywood project ‘Yudhra‘
I’m working on a film right now for excel entertainment. It’s an action, romantic thriller with Siddhant Chaturvedi. I’m shooting for that as we speak. I have a power packed action sequence for myself.
Sonam Kapoor is known as Bollywood’s ultimate fashionista, what do you think about her style?
Sonam Kapoor can pretty much pull off everything. She looks beautiful and graceful in everything that she wears. I think she is the only one in the industry who boldly experiments with fashion. She is pretty cool!
Rapid fire round:
One person you take fashion inspiration from
More than a person, Indian culture really inspires me. We have such a diverse variety of local clothing and handloom, that really inspires my dressing sense
One trend you love the most
I really like a well-tailored power suit for women. That paired with stilettos and nice hair look effortlessly chic and sexy.
One thing we can always find in your closet
A white chikankari kurta, I think it’s such an essential for every Indian girl’s wardrobe. It’s so pretty and dainty, you can just wear it with a nice pair of jhumkas.
Your go-to outfit
I love maxi dresses. I also love tank tops and dresses, they are so comfortable. They are basic, casual and stylish.
Name one trend that needs to go
Peplum tops. They are so unflattering! They need to disappear from the face of the earth.
One Bollywood actor you wish to work with
Ranbir Kapoor! I shot an advertisement with him, it was so nice to collaborate even if it was for 30 seconds. He is such a talented, sweet person. I would love to explore a film opportunity with him.
