NEW DELHI: Maruti Suzuki India may discard the plan to revive the diesel engine for its cars and pin its hopes on the CNG, according to a media on Friday.
This is in line with the emphasis on accelerating the production of vehicles powered by compressed natural gas (CNG) and alternative fuels.
Maruti Suzuki decided to part ways with a diesel powertrain in 2019 ahead of BS6 emission norms. Reports suggest India’s largest carmaker was developing 1.5-litre new diesel powertrain, which was likely to underpin Brezza, Ciaz and other Maruti cars.
Maruti Suzuki is also the leading CNG vehicle maker with 7 cars in the portfolio, which includes Alto, Celerio, Wagon-R, S-Presso, Eeco, Ertiga, Tour S and Super Carry. The company achieved its highest-ever CNG vehicle sales for a financial year selling 1,57,954 units in 2020-21.
“The government as well as the company, in accordance with Suzuki’s plan, is going ahead with pushing CNG vehicles to the maximum extent,” Economic Times reported quoting Maruti Suzuki chairman RC Bhargava.
The auto industry is bracing for the second round of BS6 emission norms that are set to come into effect in 2022-23. The new Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE 2) rules will also be implemented in April 2022, which will force carmakers to reduce CO2 emission levels to 113 g/km from 130 g/km. These, and several other stringent norms, experts believe will turn the case difficult for smaller diesel engine cars.
The company on Thursday launched an AI (Artificial Intelligence)-based 24×7 virtual car assistant app, called “S-Assist” for its NEXA customers. The scan and voice-enabled virtual car assistant, S-Assist, optimizes the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning to provide an online post-purchase experience to customers.
Maruti Suzuki Nexa customers will be able to access S-Assist through the “Maruti Suzuki Rewards” mobile app available on both iOS and Android devices. The S-Assist is available free of cost to Maruti Suzuki Nexa customers.
