NIA takes over probe into seizure of around 3,000 kg heroin at Mundra port in Gujarat

NEW DELHI: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken over the investigation of the case relating to the seizure of around 3,000 kg of narcotics from a consignment at Gujarat’s Mundra port.
The case was registered by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on September 13. As ordered by the ministry of home affairs on Wednesday, NIA has re-registered the case under Section 120B of the IPC; Section 8 (C) and 23 of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act; and Section 17 and 18 of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967 against accused Machavaram Sudhakaran, Durga P V Govindaraju, Rajkumar P and others.
The 2988.21 kgs of the narcotic substance seized at Mundra Port and later found to be heroin, was disguised as a consignment of ‘semi-processed talc stones’ originating from Afghanistan which had arrived from Bandar Abbas Port, Iran.
The Mundra Port is operated by Adani Ports and SEZ (APSEZ), which is part of the Gautam Adani-run conglomerate. In a statement put out days after the seizure, the Adani group had clarified: “The law empowers the Government of India’s competent authorities such as the Customs and the DRI to open, examine and seize the unlawful cargo. No port operator across the country can examine a container. Their role is limited to running the port”.
NIA on Wednesday said requisite actions as per law for the expeditious investigation of the case have been initiated.
