PM Modi decided to repeal farm laws now for UP, Punjab polls: Hannan Mollah

NEW DELHI: Calling the Prime Minister’s decision to repeal the farm laws as a “historic victory” of the farmers and all the people who supported them and a “forced defeat” for the Narendra Modi government just before elections in UP, Punjab and other states, farmer leaders on Friday said their protest movement will continue, while its format will be finalised at a meeting of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), the umbrella platform of 500 plus farmer organisations, to be held at the Singhu border on Saturday at 2 pm.
“The arrogant Modi-led government has been forced to accept defeat and announce repeal of the three anti-farmer, anti-people and pro-corporate laws,” said SKM leader and AIKS general secretary Hannan Mollah.
“The announcement of the Prime Minister is a big victory against the effort to corporatize agriculture and aggressively pursue neoliberal economic policies. AIKS salutes the martyrs of this united struggle and vows to continue the struggle till all our demands are met. We congratulate all those who came out in the streets and supported the movement from across the country and the world. This is the second defeat of the Modi government at the hands of farmers. Earlier the government had to put on the Land Acquisition Ordinance,” said Mollah, at a press conference here on Friday, soon after the PM promised to repeal of the three contentious farm laws in the coming winter session of Parliament.
“Clearly the announcement has been timed with the upcoming elections. Modi is interested only in winning elections… so, vote ka chot (hurting with the ballot) is the only way to defeat him and he realised that he will lose power so he took the decision,” said Mollah.
However, the protesting farmers at the Delhi’s borders will continue their movement till the three laws are formally withdrawn in Parliament, said Mollah, adding that “the farmers have little trust on the government going by the land acquisition Ordinance, which is still lying dormant, has not been withdrawn.”
“Farmer leaders will also go ahead with the Lucknow Mahapanchayat on November 22 and other programmes planned to commemorate one year of the dharna at Delhi borders from November 26, 2020,” said AIKS president Ashok Dhawale, speaking at the press conference.
The struggle will continue till an Act to ensure remunerative MSP is passed, the Electricity Amendments Bill and Labour Codes are withdrawn. It will continue until the killers of Lakhimpur Kheri and Karnal are brought to justice. This victory will spur many more united struggles and we shall hand down many more defeats to the anti-farmer, anti-worker BJP while building resistance to neoliberal economic policies.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP government are directly culpable for the loss of about 700 lives in the course of the last one year of the farmers’ struggle. AIKS demands that the PM and the BJP government take responsibility for the loss of hundreds of lives due to their insensitive and obstinate position and apologise to the nation,” AIKS demanded.
The BJP government had unleashed extreme repression and had used corporate media to malign the farmers’ protest, with the Prime Minister himself leading the charge mocking protesting farmers as ‘Andolanjeevis,’ the AIKS leaders said, adding that “the farmers will not forget this.”
