Sajid: Always made films for theatre audiences

The patience of producers like Sajid Nadiadwala and Aditya Chopra, who waited throughout the lockdowns instead of going the OTT way with their big-ticket films, has finally paid off. With theatres slated to reopen on October 22, most of them have announced the release dates of their films today. Sajid Nadiadwala also made an official announcement of their slate of big-ticket releases including ‘Tadap – An Incredible Love Story’ featuring Ahan Shetty and Tara Sutaria on December 3, the multi-starrer ‘83’ featuring Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone on Christmas 2021, ‘Bachchan Pandey’ starring Akshay Kumar, Kriti Sanon, and Jacqueline Fernandez on March 4, 2022, and the Tiger Shroff-starrer ‘Heropanti 2’ on May 6, 2022.
Speaking about the same to ETimes, Sajid said, “I have always made films for theatre audiences, and for me, the reopening of cinemas after almost a year-and-a-half is very exciting. Also, Diwali is the best time to bring people back to cinemas”.

Nadiadwala, like most other Bollywood producers, was wooed by digital platforms to release his films online but he didn’t budge. “All my films rate in the top 10 films on satellite, but, for me, my films are meant for cinemas and that is where they will always release,” he reiterates.
Nadiadwala is also the man behind ’83, based on Team India’s historic victory at the1983 World Cup. The film has been ready since over a year and will finally come wrapped as a shiny X’mas treat. But does it bother him that it will be followed, just a week later, by another cricket film, the Shahid Kapoor and Mrunal Thakur-starrer ‘Jersey’, that opens on December 31? “The industry should definitely come together and work on release dates so that clashes can be avoided and we can work together and take the industry back to its glorious days,” is all Nadiadwala will say for now.
