States have power to act against ‘hate speeches’: Anurag Thakur

NEW DELHI: Information and broadcasting minister Anurag Thakur has said that law and order is a state subject and the state government is adequately empowered to act against those who delivered ‘hate speeches’ at the Dharam Sandar in Haridwar last month.
In an interview to Time Now Navbharat, the minister said, “No one is hesitating to comment on this. You should also look at the truth of Modi government’s development schemes. Who is the highest recipient of ujjawala connections, pucca houses, toilets. Who has benefited from the scrapping of Triple Talaq? There are schemes after schemes where no caste or religion, but a beneficiary’s poverty was the only criteria. Several minorities also benefitted. Modi ji always thinks of Sabka Saath, Sabka vikas. Every Indian plays an important role in nation building. Under Modi ji, we are building a new India where everyone is taken along.”
Uttarakhand police have filed a hate speech case against Yati Narasimhanand — the organiser of the ‘dharam sansad’ in Haridwar last month that triggered outrage after some participants allegedly gave provocative speeches.
Replying to another question on the extent of poll campaign and crowds at rallies in the light of rising Covid cases, he said the government is making a concerted effort to create awareness on Covid-appropriate behaviour.
“To say that campaign should not happen, if there is a centralised order, even that can be thought about. Ultimately, it is the Election Commission which must decide. The next question is how much crowds there should be and how campaigning is done. If EC calls for discussions, all political parties will offer their views,” he said.
